A group of students from Calgary University, Canada, recently visited the Pikworo Slave Camp in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

Their visit coincided with a 2025 PANAFEST/Emancipation planning committee meeting, where Mr. Wisdom Ahadzi, the Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, shared insights on tourism development in the region.

The students were impressed by the facilities at the historic camp and urged authorities to extend similar improvements to other tourist sites.

Mr. Ahadzi emphasized the importance of preserving such landmarks to boost cultural tourism and educate visitors on Ghana’s history.

The Ghana Tourism Authority’s Upper East Regional office also acknowledged the visit, highlighting the growing interest of international students in Ghana’s heritage sites.

The Pikworo Slave Camp, a key historical site, serves as a reminder of the transatlantic slave trade and attracts scholars and tourists alike.

The students’ feedback underscores the need for continued investment in tourism infrastructure to enhance visitor experiences and promote the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Such engagements align with efforts to position Ghana as a leading destination for heritage tourism.
