Popular Ghanaian comedian and event organiser, OB Amponsah, has lamented the myriads of challenges that creatives including comedians face when organizing shows and events.
In an interview on Hitz FM’s, morning show, OB Amponsah disclose a stark revelation of how he incurred a loss of GH₵ 40,000 from his recent event at the Bukom boxing arena.
OB did not shy away from speaking about the difficulties comedians face in organising their own events, stating that his recent comedy show held at the Bukom Boxing Arena left him in debt.
“No, even the just-ended one at Bukom boxing Arena, I made a loss of about GH₵ 40,000. I’ve done about five comedy specials with no profit” he told the host DJ Slim.
According to OB, despite the financial setbacks in the creative industry, he values investment in his craft.
“And that is what George Quaye said about investing in oneself, so all the money that I spend, even if it doesn’t come back as profit, it would come back into my craft,” he noted.
OB Amponsah made history on December 21, 2024, when he filled the 4,000 capacity Bukom Boxing Arena with his 10th anniversary comedy show.
Prior to the show he put up a post to complain about the high tax elements on tickets sold at events.
According to him, it was also unfair for the Ghana Revenue Authority to place taxes on complimentary tickets.
This revelation sheds light on the challenges faced by comedians in Ghana, who often struggle to make a living from their craft despite their popularity and talent.
